Well, I think we've had the best of the crop now. Fantastic yeild from 'Butler' again - non-stringy and very vigourous.

Can someone please advise when the best time to cut off the tops is? I know I have to cut them off and not pull them up, leaving the roots in the ground over winter so the nitrogen fixing nodules can fertilise the ground, but how long should I leave the tops on?

As you are not, I assume, intending to grow from the roots next year, which of course is possible, I donít think that it matters. You therefore are not interested in the roots reabsorbing the nutrients from the above ground growth. Cut them off now unless of course you want to save some seed. Donít forget to dig up the roots before spring or they will reshoot.

Thanks Rhodie.

Didn't realise they would regrow next year.

I just meant will they continue to fix nitrogen in the roots if I leave them longer before chopping them off?
