It is very reassuring that everyone you speak to in Uplyme is completely in favour of reducing speeding through the village. I am also certain that you would get the same views expressed from everyone in say Wilmington about speeding through their village. The same is probably the case for any other village or town you wish to mention.

In that case who are the offending parties? Do I detect a hint of hypocrisy here?

Is it the case that we donít wish to foul our own nests?
Do we restrict our own speeding to that through other peopleís villages?
Can I suggest that if we find our speed creeping up when away from Uplyme that we remind ourselves that other people care just as passionately about road safety in their villages as we do about Uplyme.

I do make a point of sticking to the speed limit in all villages, though I think I am in the minority and I agree not to do so would be hypocritical.

Is it a lack of judgement on the part of the driver?
Can they not tell they are speeding ?
Do they not give a damn?

Sadly, I seriously think the only thing that will slow traffic in villages is the threat of prosecution - ie. speed cameras. It certainly worked in Chideock. I wouldn't really want to have speed bumps in the village.

I think it goes deeper than that when it comes to speeding. A neighbour of mine in Yawl waved a car to slow as it sped through at around 50mph. The affronted driver took the trouble to turn around, return and exclaim, 'But I'm a local!'

What can you do with a mentality that essentially considers their own immediate personal requirements to be above and beyond anyone else's?

I think Geoff is right, hit the pockets and points.

And we know what points mean...... Wink
