Uplyme Youth 8 – 3 Exmouth Amateurs
It could have been more!
Exmouth kicked off up the slope but immediately lost the ball and came under attack from the Uplyme forwards which culminated in a powerful shot from Anthony Simes just clearing the Exmouth crossbar. Uplyme’s Matt Pile and Kyle Knight put in a couple of one-twos to get the ball forward but no goal resulted until, in the sixth minute, a long pass forward from Simes on the half-way line to Sam Jones enabled him to bury the ball in the net. The Uplyme offensive continued; Simes maintained his supply of long passes and crosses but the Exmouth defenders prevented any shots being successful. At the Uplyme end Exmouth’s forwards were stymied by sound defending - particularly by George Heath and Jamie Wellman.
Back in the Exmouth half George’s twin brother Jack was active getting shots in and was rewarded in the twentieth minute with a goal. For the next ten minutes Uplyme kept up their assault on the Exmouth goal that resulted in two more goals – one each from Jones and Simes. In the last ten minutes of the first half Exmouth took the game up the hill a few times and were very close to scoring but for a full-speed run by Pile back to the goal-line to thump the net bound ball clear over the bar. The half time score was 4 – 0 to Uplyme.
With the slope and slight wind with them Exmouth had more of the game in the second half getting in several shots in the early minutes. However it was Uplyme’s Knight who got his name on the scorecard first in the second half by racing up the left field and drilling the ball into the top right corner of the net. Exmouth quickly came back but Uplyme’s keeper James Dunford worked hard although, in the end, he was beaten three times in the middle ten minutes of the second half resulting in three goals to Exmouth. The game remained fairly even for the next fifteen minutes however in the last five minutes of time Uplyme’s midfield, notably Will Ridout kept feeding the ball forward culminating in a further three more goals - by Jack Heath, Pile and Jones (his hat-trick).
The final score was an 8 – 3 victory for Uplyme. Uplyme’s Man of the Match was judged be Sam Jones.
