At 3.20am last night, a vehicle was spotted driving very slowly along Rhode Lane, stopping outside gates of houses. The vehicle had roof-mounted lights and the lights were turned to shine into the properties. The local police have been contacted and they were not aware of any police vehicles in the vicinity of Rhode Lane last night. There may well be a perfectly innocent explanation - perhaps, someone looking for a lost dog - but it's a good idea to be vigilant. The police asked to report any further instances, especially in the more rural locations.

That's very interesting for probably on the same night, I'm checking the date, a farmer in the area had some diesel fuel taken from his storage tank. Was this a gang that specialises in oil particularly heating oil theft. Did you see if the vehicle was perhaps a pick-up which may have had a tank in the back? Perhaps they used the light to look for oil tanks.

The problem was, because the roof lights were shining at the buildings, the car was completely black. It went down Rhode lane towards Uplyme, then back again.

I’ve now spoken to the farmer who had the oil stolen and it was almost certainly during the same night that “the rev” reported the incident. The farmer in fact disturbed the thieves at about 2:45 am and they drove off with the vehicle’s light off. Odd that they should continue to hang around the area after being disturbed and probably reported to the police.

There is certainly no harm in reporting immediately anything suspicious. The thing is, you need to keep handy or remember a police number handy that is not 999. I once called 999 and was told the suspicious activity I had spotted (and quite rightly should report) was not an emergency - i.e. it was not a burglary in progress, someone being harmed, etc.

To report a crime or incident that is not an emergency call 01202 or 01305 222222.

The number you need to call for Devon and Cornwall police (who cover Uplyme) is 08452 777444.

The numbers that Rev gave you are for Dorset police. calling these numbers will only add delay to any problems that you are reporting.

Yep - all you Lymies need to call 01305 222222

...and all you Uplymies need to call 08452 777444

Both highly memorable numbers! Rolling Eyes
