My wife and I are finding it very interesting delving into family history matters and have recently been looking for details of a long lost relative from Uplyme. Her name was Alice Maud Snell who, according to her birth certificate, was born on 10 July 1877 at 'Beechfield Cottage', Uplyme. Her parents were William and Susan Snell (n'ee Ostler).

We would be very pleased to know if the cottage still exists, so any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Best wishes ....Paul

Donna,

Thank you very much for your detailed reply regarding the cottage, we are both delighted that there is still a tangible link to the ancestor we've recently been researching. I've had a look at it on Google earth and it appears to be a very nice place to live.

By way of interest, Alice Snell, the relation born in the cottage, left Uplyme at an early age for North Devon before eventually ending up as Housekeeper to Viscount Grey (of the Earl Grey family) at his Northumberland Stately Home - a bit of a change from Beechfield! She was a very well respected lady and remained with him for over thirty years, receiving a significant financial sum from his will after he died in the 1930's.

Thanks very much again for your kind assistance, it really is appreciated.

Best wishes ....Paul
