Happy St.George's Day everyone !
And it looks like it is going to be another lovely day.
We seem to manage to celebrate St.Patrick's day with Guinness, oysters and corny Irish folk music down the pub. We manage to celebrate Burn's night with haggis and neaps heralded by a man squeezing a dead goat til it howls. But St.George's day seems to go virtually unnoticed.
At least the church proudly flys the flag of St.George - a red cross on a white background - but does anyone have any suggestions for how we should celebrate our neglected English patron saint's day ?
I've got one for starters - how about a public holiday !

I just learned that Saint George is also the patron saint of Aragon, Catalonia, Ethiopia, Georgia, Greece, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, and Russia, as well as the cities of Amersfoort, Beirut, Fakiha, Bteghrine, Cáceres (Spain), Ferrara, Freiburg, Genoa, Ljubljana, Gozo, Milan, Pomorie, Preston, Qormi, Rio de Janeiro, Lod, Barcelona and Moscow, as well as a wide range of professions, organizations, and disease sufferers (wikipedia knows everything).
I wonder how they celebrate his 'day' in those countries? _________________ I intend to live forever: - so far so good. |

Apparently, after George 'slays the dragon, and rescues the princess. The grateful citizens abandon their ancestral paganism and convert to Christianity'.
What an awful shame. I think that paganism probably did a lot less damage to humanity than christianity has. _________________ I intend to live forever: - so far so good. |

The Irish and Scots might have jovial antics fuelled by questionable hooch, but we still have things they dream about in those parts....

Donna, you'll be pleased to hear I celebrated with fish, chips and a pea fritter at Charmouth! I didn't quite go as far as a knotted hanky on my head but I did have my trouser legs rolled up (if that counts?) |
