The junction of the appropriately named Red Lane with the A35 was mentioned at the July meeting of the parish council. Councillors were concerned that a serious danger existed to vehicles travelling westward on the A35 wishing to turn left into Red Lane on finding a vehicle waiting or arriving at the junction along Red Lane. This would and has on many occasions resulted in the vehicle on the A35 having to stop suddenly. Not a good prospect considering the speed of vehicles on the A35 and the narrowness of the A35 at this point.
There have already been a number of accidents at this junction including the tragic death of a senior Uplyme parishioner.
Councillors were in agreement that something should be done about this and wrote to Devon County Council suggesting that Red Lane at the junction should be widened to enable space for two vehicles to pass. DCC’s reply was given at the August meeting. Which went along these lines: “The council has a threshold regarding the number of accidents over which action will be taken at a accident black spot. This junction has a record of accidents below this borderline and so expensive improvement works cannot be undertaken. Monitoring of the accident record at the junction will be continued.”
So when turning left into Red Lane rest assured, hopefully not in your grave, that if you are involved in an accident the resulting statistics may help in eventually making the junction safer!
In the meantime what can we do to make this junction safer at little cost.

The county council, it was announced at the October parish council meeting, has made a concession on this. They plan to extend the double white lines on the A35 at this junction. How this will ease such a dangerous situation as described above I fail to see. _________________ It's later than you think |

Yes there is and all it requires is a couple of signs and no changes to the road layout.
Ban traffic entering the A35 from Red Lane by making a short section of Red Lane one way. One “No Through Road” sign would go at the crossroads of Red Lane and Harcombe Road. The other would be a no entry sign after the last house driveway on Red Lane before the A35.
Traffic would still be able to turn into Red Lane from the A35. Traffic that would otherwise use Red Lane to access the A35 would have to proceed along Harcombe Road and join the A35 opposite the Raymonds Hill post office. |

That's not a bad idea you know. I suppose the residents of the houses whose drives open onto the proposed one-way street might be a bit miffed at having to go all the way round to get to the A35, but nothing is perfect.

A spin off for them would be that traffic in Red Lane would be reduced by half. Good thinking. _________________ It's later than you think |
