Should Good Design and Altruistic Intentions Bypass Planning Laws?
This was the subject that initiated heated discussion at last nights parish council meeting when Ken George, the ward member for Uplyme on the EDDC, reported how he intends to vote on the Laurence and Catherine Anholt’s planning application for an “eco-friendly artists’ studio, offices and accommodation” outside the village development envelope. An article on their application appeared in the LRNews on 6th January. Mr George felt that such imaginative environmentally friendly plans should be supported, although he would make the proviso that the living accommodation would be excluded from the permission.
The parish council although very impressed with the design and the intended use of the development could not support it because it would show inconsistency, for they have previously recommended refusal on a number of occasions regarding applications in the same area. Also that it contravenes the recently produced and accepted Parish Plan, which must now be consulted regarding new development, in addition to being outside the long established village development envelope.
The educational aspect of the building was discussed at great length. An argument was made that the owners or subsequent owners would not be compelled to run the building as originally intended. Later in the public forum David Sole suggested if Mr George was serious about supporting the application then he should look into to possibility of there being some kind of educational tie being put on the building.
What do you think
Should the Anholt’s be given the go-ahead
What, if any, would be the consequences if this project was to go ahead _________________ It's later than you think |

Was EDDC right in refusing this application following so much local support for the development? _________________ It's later than you think |
