Walk off the Winter Blues with the Lyme Regis Walking Festival
Feel the wind in your hair and taste the salt air on your lips – everyday’s a perfect walking day in and around Lyme Regis, and in February 2014 the beautiful little town is celebrating the natural beauty of its location and surroundings with a walking festival for all the family to enjoy.
Scheduled to take place between 8 and 16 February 2014, the Festival is a great combination of organised walking activities and self guided walks, all designed to help visitors and residents alike to discover the local coastline and the 185 million years of history embedded within its Jurassic history.
Lyme Regis lies at the heart of the 95-mile long Jurassic Coast, sitting on a stunning section of the celebrated South West Coastal Path, and is the perfect destination for walkers looking to explore the beautiful coastline and inspiring hinterland of West Dorset and East Devon. In February, storms often stir up tumultuous seas and provide dramatic vistas out to sea. Along the cliffs and further inland, skeletal trees shroud the woodlands so that breathtaking scenery and walking conditions to suit all tastes await families and serious hikers alike.
Chairman of Lyme Regis Business Group, Tony Colston explains, ‘Lyme Regis is glorious and full of visitors during the summer months, but we want to share it’s dramatic beauty during the winter months as well. This will also help to extend the season for our local businesses and encourage more people to come to the town when it isn’t as busy.’
Several hotels, guest houses, and b&b’s will be offering special rates to visitors during the festival period, while Lyme Regis’ resident guided walk experts – covering fossil, history and literary walks to name but a few – will be running a special programme of walks during the Festival. Details will be posted, together with a list of participating traders and hoteliers on www.lymeregis.org and the Festival’s facebook page, www.facebook.com/LymeRegisWalkingFestival
