Uplyme Youth 1 - Ottery St Mary 8
On Sunday, at their Venlake home ground, Uplyme Youth played their inaugural match in the East Devon League. Their game was against last year's league champions Ottery St Mary. The match opened well for Uplyme and, in the first five minutes Uplyme had most of the play with their hard-working mid-field providing their forwards with many chances producing three good shots on goal two of which came from Uplyme's man-of-the-match Josh Armytage. However in the eighth minute, against the run of play Ottery opened up the score with a goal from their quick forward play. Three minutes later Ottery scored a second goal though this time aided by a little good fortune. In the twelfth Josh, again showing great skill and speed up front, thumped in Uplyme's only goal of the match. The game was even for the next ten minutes with chances at both ends. However, in the remainder of the first half, Ottery's experience showed and produced three more goals and several more chances prevented only by the robust Uplyme defence. The half-time score was 1-5. In the second half Uplyme kept their spirits up and produced many chances. However their finishing was not up to Ottery's who produced two more goals despite Uplyme's spirited defence by their back four and mid-field three. A further Ottery goal was provided by an unfortunate own goal. Although Ottery won the day Uplyme should not be too disappointed as they showed great promise with an obviously talented and well balanced squad who will, no doubt, mature throughout the season. Uplyme's next game is away to Exmouth Eagles on Sunday 16th.
