A torrent of goals in the rain

Uplyme Youth 11 Exmouth Town 4

Last Sunday, on a very wet and blustery afternoon Uplyme had their first win at home in the Devon Youth U13 League – and what a win!

Although Uplyme forwards got a shot in the first minute, they were caught wanting defensively for most of the first 10 minutes and went down to two well-crafted Exmouth goals. So it was 0 – 2 down and time for the Uplyme midfield and forwards to step on the gas and get cooking. They produced a veritable feast of goals and nearly everyone tucked-in with quality goals from: George Heath, Sam Jones (2), Josh Armytage, Kyle Knight, Anthony Simes and Tom Chapple. It wasn’t all one-way though, Exmouth made chances but the Uplyme defence, learning from the tribulations of the opening minutes, kept them out. The half-time score was 7 – 2.

The second half began, as the first, with pressure on the Uplyme goal but this time, with assistance from their midfield, Uplyme denied Exmouth any goals. The second five minutes saw Uplyme again on the offensive with defender Jack Fox pushing up into midfield and, by slotting in accurate passes, assisted in goals scored by Liam Aldworth and Anthony Simes. With the score at 9 – 2 Exmouth came back again and despite saves from Brett James Exmouth got their third. More end-to-end play produced a couple of untidy goals – one more each for each side, including Anthony Simes’ hat-trick. Uplyme then had more of the play and, with twelve minutes to go, their massed forward attack produced a second goal from Josh Armytage. Exmouth did not give up and in the last ten minutes Uplyme defence and keeper were kept on their toes. The final score was 11 – 4 and despite the rain soaked conditions this lively and exiting match was a credit to both squads.

The referee judged Uplyme’s Man of the Match to be Anthony Simes. Uplyme Youth’s next match is away to Feniton next Sunday 30th September at 10.30am.
