Uplyme Youth 1 - Ottery St Mary 0
Uplyme Youth’s first win of the season and their first ever defensive clean sheet.
Uplyme kicked off downhill with the wind and sun behind them and had most of the play for the first few minutes and some quick-fire passes between Sam Jones and Johnnie Turner causing some problems to the Ottery defence. In the fifth minute a well taken Uplyme corner
needed some adept work from the Ottery keeper to prevent a score. There was a quick response from the Ottery attack at the other end but efficient work by George Heath and Jack Rumens took out the sting. It was end to end for a few minutes with the ball travelling across the width of the Ottery goal without contact then seconds later Uplyme’s right back Callum Taylor in a one-on-one with an Ottery forward prevented score. Then Uplyme’s keeper Brett James also impeded the Ottery attack by a well executed punch out. The game went mostly for Uplyme for the remaining 20 minutes of the first half and after several near misses by Tom Chapple, Jones and Anthony Simes. However it was Simes who was rewarded by a goal - a phenomenal 45 yard shot which thumped into the back of the net. The score at half time score was 1 – 0 to Uplyme.
With the slope and wind in their favour Ottery started off the second half strongly and in the first minute missed an open goal. Uplyme came forward now and again with Jack Heath having several chances - one a powerful volley which went over the net. But most of the action was down at the Uplyme end where keeper James and his defenders had numerous well executed Ottery corners to deal with. The final five minutes were more even, with attacks on both goals but all shots were saved or went wide. The final score was 1 – 0 in favour of Uplyme. This was Uplyme’s first win of this season and their first ever defensive clean sheet.
Uplyme’s Man of the Match was judged be Anthony Simes. Uplyme’s next match is 2.00pm Sunday 16th November at home to Beacon Knights.
