One Thursday evening after the Scout Meeting in Rhode Hill Lane, a few Scouts decided to sample some of the delicious apples that grew on trees in gardens near to the vicarage. Yes, we were caught in the act by the the then village policeman, Jack Guest, who lived in the Police House in Yawl Road. As a punishment, he told us to meet him at 10 am on the next Saturday morning outside the Church. We were to be dressed smartly.

He met us as arranged and he was also smartly dressed, but not in uniform. He explained that we were to be taken by him to apologise to the people that we had stolen apples from. He walked us along to the first house near the vicarage. There were about five or six of us. PC Guest knocked on the door and it was answered by a rather elderly lady, who I think was a bit deaf.

PC Guest said to her, "These young men are here to apologise to you for stealing your apples on Thursday night." The old lady stepped forward and said , "I see..... well...." she prodded PC Guest firmly on the chest and continued..."You are old enough to know better, so clear off." He was so surprised that he burst out laughing and couldn't stop! He then told us all to go home and forget all about it! I've never forgotten it and havn't been scrumping since!

Does anyone out there remember this?.... MAYBE there are other tales to be told??

Jeff,

This is a wonderful tale of life in the village. Thank you so much for sharing it with us.
If anyone else has a tale to tell, please feel free to share it with us all here ?
It is very easy to do, but if you encounter any problems with the technical aspects of this please email webmaster@uplyme.com for assistance.

Webmaster.
