UPLYME YOUTH 4 EXMOUTH TOWN 3
Uplyme back with a Win !!

After a break of nearly three months without a league game due to the extreme wintry weather throughout December and January – Uplyme finally returned to action with a home fixture against Exmouth Town. The enforced period of inactivity had seen Uplyme slip to the bottom of the league and they were now facing the unbeaten league leaders.

The match also saw the return of last season’s top goal scorer Josh Armytage, back in action following a cruciate ligament injury and he signalled his return with a quick fire goal after just thirty seconds. Uplyme kept up the pressure with efforts from Anthony Simes and Matty Pile but Exmouth equalised in the eleventh minute. Uplyme regained the lead on twenty minutes with a firmly struck penalty from Armytage. Play swung from end to end and captain Sam Jones marshalled the defence well to protect Uplyme’s lead. As the first half drew to a close Jack Heath was put clear on goal and finished well to put Uplyme 3-1 up at the break.

Playing down the slope in the second half Jack Heath broke clear of the defence but saw his shot clip the bar. Armytage completed his hat trick in the fiftieth minute when up when he outpaced the Exmouth defence and slipped the ball past the keeper, to put Uplyme 4-1 up. Exmouth pulled a goal back three minutes later with a good shot following an indirect free kick. The goal gave Exmouth fresh impetus and sensing they could get back into the game they mounted sustained pressure. George Heath and Matty Pile were on top of their game as a succession of attacks were repelled. Uplyme responded with a dipping shot from Kyle Knight which was clawed to safety by the Exmouth keeper. With five minutes remaining Exmouth scored again with a well taken overhead kick following a set piece to make the score 4-3. Johnnie Turner flashed a header over the bar in the closing minutes as Uplyme held out for a memorable victory.

Uplyme’s Man of the Match was awarded to Matty Pile for a solid all round display in defence and midfield.
