Under 16 East Devon League

Colyton 4 – 3 Uplyme Youth

A Hectic Local Derby.

Uplyme kicked off with Kyle Knight thrusting forward to find Sam Jones up front but a kick too far put the ball in the Colyton’s keeper’s safe hands. The following five minutes were Colyton’s and the Uplyme keeper James Dunford intervened half a dozen times before an adept one two put one past him into the net. The Colyton attack continued but sound work by all four Uplyme defenders prevented any score. Ten minutes in, the Uplyme midfield and forwards got into their stride, equalling the attacking play, and for twenty minutes there were scoring chances at both ends. Several free kicks close to the Colyton penalty area gave Uplyme’s skipper Jones opportunities to put the ball directly past the Colyton keeper, indeed it id seem that he succeeded, but a goal was disallowed for an offside infringement. However Jones’ hard work did prevail in the end, when in the thirty-second minute, he fought past the defence and found the net. The remaining ten minutes of the first half was an evenly balanced, exiting period of play but resulted in no more score leaving it 1 – 1 at half-time.

Colyton came out attacking in the second half and scored three times in the first quarter of an hour. Colyton could have got a couple more but for Dunsford’s keeping and relentless defence by the Uplyme backs. The score line didn’t reflect the actual balance of the game as Uplyme’s had a good share of mid and forward play and eventually Uplyme were rewarded by a goal thanks to a clinical penalty taken by Jones. With their tails up Uplyme dominated the final ten minutes of play but could only score once more – a final minute goal by Knight. Thus Colyton were the victors in this hectic local Derby match.

Uplyme’s Man of the Match was judged be Jack Rumens. Uplyme’s next match is a Devon County Cup match on Sunday 7th November away at Buckland Athletic– an 11am kick-off.
